Chogoria Route

Chogoria route is known as the most scenic route on Mount Kenya. Start at the Chogoria gate and pass through open grasslands until the "Roadhead" campsite. Refill your bottles at the stream and follow the trail all the way up to Mintos campsite. There is water at Mintos lake, but use a water filter here or carry enough from Roadhead.

Proceed for the summit push to Point Lenana up to 4,985 meters. After the summit, you can decent on another route or run down again using Chogoria route. Pass by at Lake Ellis for a scenic finish. A guide is required to enter Mt Kenya National Park. This route has wildlife activity with Leopards, Buffalos at night.

For a day run, stay at Chogoria bandas (camping or hut) for the night and start in the morning. The road to the gate through the forest can be tricky at times, but has been improved lately. A 4x4 is best, regular cars can also make it most of the time. Worth case there are Land Rovers available from Chogoria town, although they are pricey.
